Section titled “Comparison with Other Tools”The AI skills ecosystem has several tools that solve different parts of the skill management problem. ai-skills-sync is designed to work alongside them, not replace them.
What ai-skills-sync Does
Section titled “What ai-skills-sync Does”ai-skills-sync solves one specific problem: deciding which skills belong in which projects. It reads a single config file, resolves which skills apply to the current project (based on global rules, project-specific assignments, and file-based conditions), and syncs them to agent directories.
It does not:
- Host or discover skills (use a skill registry for that)
- Replace agent-specific skill formats (it copies standard SKILL.md directories)
- Require any changes to how your AI agent reads skills
How It Complements Other Tools

Section titled “Skill Registries and Installers”Tools like Vercel’s npx skills provide a directory for discovering and installing skills. They answer “what skills exist and how do I get them?”
ai-skills-sync answers the next question: “now that I have these skills, which ones should be active in which project?”
You can use a skill registry to discover skills, then use ai-skills-sync to manage where they’re activated:

Section titled “Manual Skill Setup”If you manage skills by hand (copying SKILL.md directories into .claude/skills/ or similar), ai-skills-sync can take over that job. Instead of manually copying and removing skills per project, declare them once in config and let the tool handle syncing.
The migration is straightforward:
- Note which skills you have installed in each project
- Add them to your
ai-skills-syncconfig (global, project-specific, or conditional) - Run
npx ai-skills-syncto sync
Symlink-Based Approaches
Section titled “Symlink-Based Approaches”Some tools use symlinks to share skills across projects. ai-skills-sync uses copies instead of symlinks, which has trade-offs:
Copies (ai-skills-sync):
- Work on all platforms including Windows
- No broken links if the source moves
- Skills are self-contained in each project
- Copies are cached, so disk usage is minimal
Symlinks:
- Changes to the source are immediately reflected everywhere
- Single source of truth on disk
The Core Differentiator
Section titled “The Core Differentiator”What sets ai-skills-sync apart is conditional activation. No other tool provides file-pattern-based skill activation where:
- React skills appear when
.tsxfiles exist - Terraform skills appear when
.tffiles exist - Skills are automatically cleaned up when they no longer match
This matters because of context. AI coding agents have limited budgets for skill metadata. Loading 40 skills into every project means the agent spends context on irrelevant instructions instead of the skills that actually matter for the current codebase.
ai-skills-sync ensures each project has exactly the skills it needs, keeping your agent’s context focused.
Works With the Agent Skills Standard
Section titled “Works With the Agent Skills Standard”ai-skills-sync works with any skill that follows the Agent Skills open standard (directories containing a SKILL.md file). This standard is supported by Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Cursor, and other AI coding tools. Skills installed by any tool that follows this standard are compatible with ai-skills-sync.
